Draft of a letter by Wilkes to the editors of the National Intelligencer, which was published June 15, 1848 answering Senator Thomas Hart Benton's letter published May 15, in which Benton gave credit to Lt. Col. Frémont for finding errors in the maps of the California and Oregon coasts. Wilkes refuted much of what Benton said in this letter and one published on June 8, 1848. He describes the methods of mapping the coastline and the Sacramento River in his Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842.

The United States Exploring Expedition under the command of Charles Wilkes left U.S.A. Aug. 1838, returning July 1842. Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858) was a Missouri Democrat who served as a senator from 1821 to 1851. He opposed both abolitionism and the extension of slavery into new territories, but was a staunch advocate of westward expansion of the United States. He died in 1858.
